About

Jane Hindmarch, born in Haverfordwest, Wales is a British contemporary artist based in Stamford, Lincolnshire and is known for her observational multidisciplinary art drawn from a close contemplation of the natural world.

Often painting ‘en plein air’, Hindmarch’s oeuvre becomes a conduit for an exploration of mood and emotion informed by observations of natural phenomena. Specialising in various artistic practices; painting, drawing, and metal sculptures – she blends the sensory essence of nature in her work.

She lives near Stamford with her husband Tom, their three wonderful daughters and an array of animals. Presently, her focus lies on honing her craft as an artist and producing a new solo show depicting the Arcadia Gardens, Sheffield – it will be exhibited across England in 2025. She works from her studio in Stamford, located at Stamford Arts Centre, 27 St Mary’s St, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE9 2DL.

Artistic Practice:

Through her meticulous process of direct observation, she scrutinises the ephemeral changes taking place during the seasons, capturing the dynamic interplay of climate and the cyclical rhythm of nature. This engagement extends beyond surface-level observation, delving into the nuanced relationship between humanity and the environment; offering poignant reflections on the human condition.

In her artistic practice, nature becomes both muse and medium. Immersed in the elements – weather, light, colour, and sound – she finds solace and inspiration. Her work becomes a testament to the perpetual flux of growth, decay, energy, and dormancy that characterises the natural world, and echoes the ebb and flow of life itself.

Her artistic process is characterised by a profound reverence for the immediacy and authenticity of direct observation. Sketches and paintings executed outside serve as the foundation for her artistic vision, capturing the essence of personal perception interwoven with the rendering of the natural environment. Energetically charged brushstrokes are purposefully rigorous, simple and direct; capturing the essence of nature’s myriad moods.

Exploration of Nature:

She adeptly portrays the diverse atmospheres of nature, whether it’s conveyed through the brisk rush of wind amidst rolling hills, the soft hues of delicate snowdrops in early Spring, or the melancholy transition to Autumn highlighted by earthy shades creating the sensory experience of the gentle rustle of falling leaves. She juxtaposes the tranquillity with the tumultuousness that the natural world offers.

Against the backdrop of contemporary challenges such as the climate crisis and global unrest, her art breathes for equilibrium. She navigates the tension between despair and hope, seeking to reconcile the complexities of the human experience with the enduring reassurance found in the resilience of the natural world. Her work is a testament to the enduring power of art to transcend boundaries through her evocative exploration of nature. She invites viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of all things and to find solace in the beauty and resilience of the world around us.

Educational Background and Collaborations:

Hindmarch’s educational background includes studies in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, Edinburgh College of Art, and Montpellier École des Beaux-Arts. She has spent many years teaching art in schools, and colleges in East Midlands, such as Teacher of Art and Acting Head of Art at Stamford School, Teacher of Art and Scenery Painting Residency at Casterton Business and Enterprise College and various Artists in Schools projects.

Benefiting from a collaboration graciously extended by The Traditional Co, Ironworks in Leicestershire, Hindmarch crafts sculptural pieces in steel at their fabrication workshop. Her collection of sculptures draws on the symbiotic relationship between her artistic mind and the raw material. The sinuous lines of her three-dimensional metal sculptures serve as an outlet for both therapeutic release and dynamic expression, mirroring the act of drawing and the immersive experience of the natural world. Through this exploration of form and expression of artistic vision, she evokes lightness, intensity, and energy, all while preserving the inherent simplicity of the sculpture.
