A Full Scale Model Of Your Sculpture Commission!

If you were to commission me to create a bespoke sculpture for you I would take the greatest care to make sure your wishes are understood and interpreted to the best of my ability. I would also ensure that every necessary step is taken to make your dream sculpture a reality!

Let me share with you what goes on behind the scenes and some of the ways I try my best to make absolutely sure you will be thrilled with your commissioned project…

At the beginning of the project we would discuss the concept and ideas and agree on the budget, location and design of your bespoke sculpture. Once these are decided upon the deposit of 50% is made prior to the work commencing.

Before starting work on the final sculpture itself I will try whenever possible to create a full size model of the proposed piece and site it at the exact location. The purpose of this is to ensure that the location, the scale of the piece, the effect of the sculpture and the chosen material were all exactly what you you would wish for.

Construction of model from painted plywood and mild steel.

To demonstrate this process I have included photos of the making and trial of the full scale model we made for “Concurrent Orbs Ascending” at Redhill Lodge Gardens in Leicestershire, 2021.

The wooden model was made and set up on location in preparation for fabrication of the actual sculpture from Corten steel .

The model, made from a combination of 12mm plywood sheet and 3mm mild steel was then painted in dark Chestnut brown to recreate the effect of the proposed Corten steel material. Thanks to Adam Renton for help with modelmaking.

We installed the model in exactly the proposed spot in a wonderful location where it created a pinnacle at the highest, and most central point in the garden, also reflecting in the surface of the square pool.

The model was secured with wires from all sides and remained in place for a few days so as to be observed in various lights and from different angles throughout the day.

When I returned later on that week to discuss the results with my clients it was decided to increase the scale of the piece by 200mm in height in order to see the top clearly from the lowest area of the garden and create an invitation to entice people closer, exploring the garden in that direction .

When we were satisfied that every aspect had been considered and the correct decisions had been made the model was removed and fabrication of the final piece according to the adjustments began.

The fabrication of the sculpture in 12mm Corten steel plate and the installation took place in collaboration with the Traditional Co, Ironworks, Leicestershire.

I’m happy to tell you that my clients are really delighted with the final result!
