Hello, I’m Jane Hindmarch!
I was born in South West Wales and grew up in Stamford, Lincolnshire, in the East of England. I studied art at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology, Edinburgh College of Art, and Montpellier École des Beaux Arts in South West France.
Alongside my own art practice, I spent many years teaching art while also building a life as a wife and mother to three lovely daughters.
We live in the countryside and I’m deeply inspired by the rhythms of the natural world; its balance and continuity, cycles of growth, decay, strength and fragility.
This body of work has grown from repeated visits to Arcadia, Garden a remarkable experimental garden in Sheffield. Arcadia’s naturalistic perennial planting, full of beauty and transformation, has provided endless inspiration and shaped this ongoing project.
I’m very proud to share these artworks with you, and I invite you to explore the pieces and discover more!

The Inspiration Behind
In Arcadia Ego
-I Am In Paradise-
“ In Arcadia Ego “ - “In Arcadia/Paradise, I am.”
This evocative classical phrase suggests the presence of mortality even in paradise, here it is reimagined!
As Life itself, a garden moves through cycles of bloom and decay, light and shadow, presence and absence; and yet, through every transformation, it is an paradise within reach!
This exhibition invites you to experience the garden or natural environment not just as a place, but as a metaphor: for memory, renewal, development and change.
Over the past two years I’ve been making regular visits to Arcadia Garden in Sheffield, a unique naturalistic, perennial garden which is full of different habitats including woodland, meadows tall herbaceous planting, and is constantly changing with the seasons. I’ve spent hours drawing directly from life, striving to capture those shifting moments as the garden moves through its cycle.
Arcadia itself is a unique experimental garden, created by landscape architects Doug Baker and Charlotte Liu, both Landscape Architects from the department of Landscape Design at Sheffield University. They are exploring how plant communities can thrive together over time, testing the balance of nature in a living, evolving environment.
The piece to the right “Emerald Woodland Edge June 1st “ represents the early spring growth at the edge of the sheltered woodland. There are contrasting shadows but the painting is full of verdant, dynamic growth, optimism and hope.
The painting processes explore these ideas further. My painting methods include the layering of various media; pooling liquid paint at an early stage to create atmosphere and depth and then building more tangible elements of plants and foliage which “grow” out of the earthy background. I try to imagine the painting “growing “ in the same way as nature!
In the painting to the left “Golden Days, October, Arcadia Garden” I used warm coloured glazes to bathe the painting in a golden light as summer fades. Click on the title to read more!
In Arcadia Ego, brings together the artworks that grew out of my visits to Arcadia Garden, but they are not just about the appearance of the plants and trees. They are really about how it feels to be there; the sense of stillness, reflection, and connection to nature.
My hope is that as you look at the work, you’ll find some of that same calm and curiosity, and maybe be reminded of the ways gardens and the natural world nurtures us.
I’m so excited to finally share my last few years’ work with you!
Hope you enjoy!
Jane

Kind words from happy collectors!
“Jane’s pictures are hung at certain points in our house that allow you to catch a glimpse as you pass by. We always feel better for the encounter. We are so grateful to have such beautiful things improving our lives.”
— Mrs and Mrs S
“We have two bright and beautiful early summertime scene paintings painted by Jane which provide a cheerful and uplifting environment in our kitchen.
It was super to access framing through Jane and the personal delivery service was the icing on the cake!”
— Mark and Sarah
'I love Jane's art and she is a pleasure to deal with. She responded promptly to my request and kept me informed throughout the buying process, including sending a follow-up message to make sure I was happy with my purchase.”
— Caryn
“The process from first discussing design possibilities with Jane, to the installation of our sculpture was seamless, and so much fun! We are delighted with the result, especially the way the light cast on the sculpture changes throughout the day and the seasons - we may well commission another. If you want to be involved in the creation of a one-off piece for your garden, I can’t recommend Jane highly enough.”
— Mr and Mrs B
“I am absolutely delighted with my print of Arcadia Gardens Late Spring 2023 by Jane. The print is really stunning and when I walk in the kitchen it makes me feel happy: who needs a vase of flowers when I now have something which will last all the year round. The colours are just beautiful.”
— Sarah
“Each time I look out from the house (now frequently) your sculpture gives me tremendous pleasure; I am truly delighted with it and the difference it has made to the garden.”
— Duncan
Jane’s painting is so beautiful and vibrant, and the colours change all day with the different light. Lots of people have admired it. Thank you again!
— Richard and Trudy
“ I have bought 3 really big pieces which are in pride of place and always much admired and I have my beautiful concentric circles work of art in the front of our house. I have never tired of looking at Jane’s paintings and sculpture “
—Rebecca
